A brief history of Tippmann

Tippmann has been family owned from day one. Not originally in the paintball industry, Tippmann started out as a manufacturer of collectible, half-scale replica machine guns. They didn’t enter the paintball industry until 1986, which was largely influenced by changes in gun laws.

Despite some heavy reservations that paintball was a simple fad that would come and go, the Tippmann’s decided to go all in on paintball. I think many paintballers these days would say it was a great move!

Tipmmann already had the ability to manufacture guns, and building paintball guns shared many of the same basic principles as the machine guns they were producing. Due to their already “ built in” experience in the gun industry, the Tippmanns' markers were far more advanced than the rest of the industry competitors. They were actually the very first company to build semi-automatic and fully automatic paintball markers. This helped to jump start the company that quickly grew from only eight employees in 1986 to over 120. This expansion grew from a single, domestic location in Fort Wayne, Indiana to the addition of an international facility in Tournai, Belgium.

So, what was the marker that started it all?

It was the SMG-60. This bad boy was the very first fully auto and select fire paintball gun to hit the industry. The SMG-60 was also the very first gun to have built in constant air. The company has also been credited with the development of several much needed technologies, such as the use of C3 with PEP Technology propane markers in 2005, and improved Anti-Chop technology (ACT) in 2006, which was much needed in order to combat paint breakage inside the paintball markers.
